Ongoing Projects

The NOMADE group is presently involved in a number of research projects funded by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche and the European Commission.

TOPSKY: “Topological properties of magnetic skyrmions and opportunities for novel spintronic devices
Contract no. ANR-17-CE24-0025
1 November 2017 – 30 April 2021

TOPSKY aims to address five scientific knowledge gaps related to magnetic skyrmions in ultrathin ferromagnets: the mechanisms for nucleation and annihilation, reduction of skyrmion size and the interaction with defects, coupling with conduction electrons, current-induced motion, and the dynamics of skyrmionic textures. The project is coordinated by Vincent Cros at the Unité Mixte de Physique CNRS/Thales (Palaiseau) and involves researchers at the Laboratoire de Physique des Solides (Orsay), Institut Néel (Grenoble), Laboratoire Charles Coulomb (Montpellier), CEA SPEC Saclay, and the NOMADE group at C2N.

CHIPMuNCS: “Chaos-based Information Processing with Magnetic Nano-oscillators
Contract no. ANR-17-CE24-0008
1 February 2018 – 31 January 2021

CHIPMuNCS is a frontier research project at the interface between nanomagnetism, spintronics, and nonlinear dynamics. It is motivated by the premise that the rich behaviour of nonlinear systems, in particular chaos, can be leveraged for alternative paradigms for computing and information processing. The primary objective is to establish the utility and feasibility of the nanocontact vortex oscillator, a nanoscale spintronic device, as a universal building block for chaos-based information processing by demonstrating three technological functionalities: random number generation, secure communications, and nonlinear computing. The project is coordinated by Joo-Von Kim and involves researchers at the Laboratoire Matériaux Optiques, Photonique et Systèmes (Metz), Institut Jean Lamour (Nancy) and the Unité Mixte de Physique CNRS/Thales (Palaiseau).

SWANGATE: “Spin-wave nanochannels for reprogrammable logic gates
Contract no. ANR-16-CE24-0027
1 February 2017 – 31 January 2020

SWANGATE is an ambitious project which aims to develop a new approach for down-scaling magnonic devices to the nanometer scale. Its aim is to investigate a new route to achieve scalable and reprogrammable spin wave devices based on channelling in domain wall structures. The project is coordinated by Prof. Michel Hehn at the Institut Jean Lamour (Nancy) and involves researchers at the Institut de Physique et de Chimie des Matériaux de Strasbourg, Technische Universität Kaiserslautern, and the NOMADE group at the C2N.

MEMOS: “Magnetic associative memory based on coupled nano-oscillators
Grant no. ANR-14-CE26-0021
1 December 2014 – 30 November 2018

MEMOS is an interdisciplinary project at the interface between Spintronics, Neuroscience and Microelectronics. Its goal is to implement an Associative Memory, a bio-inspired concept that operates differently from classical Random Access Memories, by exploiting the complex properties of magnetic nano- devices. The project is coordinated by Dr. Julie Grollier at the Unité Mixte de Physique CNRS/Thales (Palaiseau) and involves researchers from Thales TRT, CEA Saclay, and the NANOARCHI and NOMADE groups at the C2N.

MAGicSky: “Magnetic Skyrmions for Future Nanospintronic Devices
Grant no. 665095 (H2020-FETOPEN-2014-2015-RIA)
1 September 2015 – 31 August 2018

MAGicSky (Magnetic Skyrmions for Future Nanospintronic Devices) will develop the first proof-of-concept room temperature spintronic devices based on magnetic skyrmions. Skyrmions are magnetic solitons that carry information, and are remarkably robust against defects that can trap or destroy them due to the topology of their magnetic texture. They can be used in nanoscale devices compatible with conventional integrated circuit technology. The project is coordinated by Dr. Vincent Cros for the CNRS node (which includes the C2N NOMADE group), and involves Universität Hamburg, University of Leeds, University of Glasgow, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, and the Paul Scherrer Institut.

Past Funding

ULTRASKY: “Skyrmions in Ultrathin Magnetic Films for Low-Power
Spintronics
Grant no. ANR-14-CE26-0012
1 January 2015 – 31 December 2016

ULTRASKY is a fundamental physics project in which we aim to generate, stabilize and observe nanoscale magnetic objects called skyrmions in material systems for spintronics. The aims are to identify candidate materials for hosting skyrmions in ultrathin multilayer films, understand how they can be nucleated and stabilized, and provide robust schemes to detect their presence. The project is coordinated by Dr. André Thiaville of the Laboratoire de Physique des Solides (Orsay) and involves researchers from the Unité Mixte de Physique CNRS/Thales (Palaiseau), Institut Néel (Grenoble), Laboratoire Charles Coulomb (Montpellier), and the NOMADE group at the C2N.

NanoSWITI: “Nanoscale manipulation of spin waves in itinerant ferromagnets: technologies and fundamentals
Grant no. ANR-11-BS10-03
1 December 2011 – 30 November 2015

The primary objective of the NanoSWITI project is to develop an innovative all‐electrical means of nanoscale spin wave detection and manipulation. It will provide a means of measuring short wavelength (< 100 nm) spin waves and allow physical studies of magnetic relaxation on these length scales. The project is coordinated by Dr. Matthieu Bailleul of the Institut de Physique et de Chimie des Matériaux de Strasbourg and involves researchers from the Unité Mixte de Physique CNRS/Thales (Palaiseau), XLIM (Limoges), Thales TRT (Palaiseau), and the NOMADE group at the C2N.
